Purchasing Lingerie for Valentine's Day - A Guide for Men

Once you're ready to buy, consider the following:

- Know your partner's sizes! It will spoil the Valentine's Day fun if your partner has to take the lingerie back to the shop and exchange it. If you don't know what sizes to get, and don't want to ask, snoop through her underwear drawer to find out what sizes she wears, or ask one of her friends.

If that's not an option, see if you can find a saleswoman in a lingerie shop who looks to be the same size as your partner, and ask her politely. They're used to answering those sorts of questions, and will be happy to help you. If all else fails and you must guess at size, then err on the small side. Better to have your partner believe you think she's smaller than she is, than have her believe you think she's oversized.

- Avoid anything with mechanical enhancements -- e.g. bras with gel filling, control-top hose, or such. Suggesting that your partner needs artificial assistance to improve her natural charms is absolutely the wrong message to send.

- Keep it simple. Remember, this is for both of you, and if your partner is comfortable in it, things will go much more smoothly. Most women will not be comfortable in a thong and corset. Don't buy something just because you want to see her in it. Buy something that she'll want to wear for you.

- Consider what your partner normally wears -- again, this is where a study of her underwear drawer can help. What styles does she like? What colours and fabrics does she prefer? Don't go straight for black and red satin and lace -- there are a lot more possible choices than that, and cotton or silk or another fabric may be more to your partner's taste.

Once you've purchased your lingerie, be sure to present it nicely, in a beautiful gift box. Accompanying it with another gift may help reduce any awkwardness your partner may feel. And remember, have fun!
